As coronavirus spreads throughout the world, racing organisers have made the sensible decision to cancel or postpone many events, from MotoGP to Le Mans. While global motorsport might be taking a break, petrolheads in isolation can still get their adrenalin fix. Digitally. Thanks to streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and YouTube there’s a bounty of films and documentaries with a motorsport angle to explore. These are some of our favourites.
Amazon Prime: Oil in the Blood goes deep into the culture of the custom motorcycle scene, travelling the world to hear the stories of the people behind the machines.
Netflix: Follow the creation of a hypercar from the design studio to the R&D lab and onto the street. Apex tells the story of the hypercar, and in particular Christian Von Koenigsegg’s dream to build the fastest, most spectacular performance car the world has ever seen.
Amazon Prime: An anthology of the best biker movies and documentaries curated by the Motorcycle Film Festival, including a tribute to the Isle of Man’s fallen heroes and the story of the USA’s only all-female sidecar road racing team.
YouTube: Monster Energy’s five-part exclusive series, The Doctor, goes behind the scenes with Valentino Rossi featuring never-before-seen interviews and clips with the racing legend.
Netflix: This biographical documentary charts the life story of one of Formula One’s greatest champions, Juan Manuel Fangio. Working his way from mechanic in Argentina to five-time F1 champion driver, A Life of Speed gives viewers a rare insight into the brilliance of El Maestro.
Netflix: Follow motorsport team Jota Sport as they prepare for the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 category. Patrick Stewart and Tiff Needell narrate with appearances from a host of racing stars including Allan McNish and Mark Webber.
YouTube: A free-to-watch film that follows a father and son race team as they embark on the Baja 1000. Expect a bumpy ride.
YouTube: A documentary by Al Jazeera exploring what drives the riders to compete in the TT, the world’s most dangerous motorcycle race. Very watchable, and free to view.
Netflix: Charlize Theron produces this show that pits some of the world’s best street racers head-to-head on a custom track in supercharged cars.
Amazon Prime: The gripping story of the Dunlops, the greatest dynasty in road racing. Follow two generations of road racers on this emotional rollercoaster narrated by Liam Neeson.
