Inside the Motul Factory – a unique glimpse behind the scenes!

Casted, drilled, filled. Inside one of Motul’s factories, we discovered how Motul’s mission of ‘outstanding lubrication’ is actually achieved on the ground. On the outskirts of Paris, in Vaires-sur-Marne, Motul’s French factory, which provides products for the European continent, is firing on all cylinders. Our tour guide, Mohamed Kerdouch, who is in charge of quality controls at the European factory, accompanied us for a glimpse behind the scenes at one of the many factories around the world where Motul produces its fine products.

The Motul Factory is divided into four different zones. Firstly, we have the development area – clean, white laboratories where a constant tests, refinements, approvals and quality controls are carried out. Men and women in white lab coats inspect the quality of the oils being produced using complex analysis equipment, in order to maintain the consistency of these premium products. The second area is where the blending effectively takes place. In the third area we see the bottles and barrels being filled and labelled by high-speed robotically engineered machines. Finally, the products are collected in the shipment area, ready for dispatch to various clients and stores around the continent.

In the production area, the crude base oil is brought in by enormous trucks and stored in huge silos. Here, the magic begins. The secret formula is applied, based on 166 years of tweaks, refinements and specialist in-house knowledge. Several different additives are mixed into the base product with several large machines which, at the end of the process, provides the excellent lubrication that characterises all Motul’s products.

Every day, around 120 staff work in shifts at this highly automated factory (automatic filling lines and automatic blenders). During this process, samples are constantly being taken for testing and approval in the quality control department.

Not everybody knows this, but besides oils for the automotive, boating and motorcycle sectors, Motul’s industrial oils (MotulTech division) are also used to lubricate all kinds of machinery in sectors ranging from agriculture, rail transport and aeronautics to cosmetics and the construction sector, and many more…
