Former Subaru rally ace Toshihiro Arai wrapped up the Japanese rally championship and took the title at the ninth event of the competition, with one more race to go. He held out against stiff competition in his Subaru WRX STi Group N car.
The ninth round of the All Japan Rally Championship was held near Takayama City in the Gifu prefecture and presented all the crews with a significant challenge. All of its stages were held on dry tarmac and crossed through a dense forest area with riders facing blind entries to most of the corners.
Arai’s main rival was the Advan Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Gr N of Fumio Hitoshihara after Takuma Kamada had to retire with mechanical failure. The battle was close but Arai managed to gain a 5-second lead over Hitoshihara, took the win and confirmed his title.
